Tens of thousands of students took to the streets of Tirana over the rising cost of education and corruption. The protest turned into unrest: the Ministry of Education building and two banks, including a Raiffeisen branch, were set on fire, shop windows were smashed and bins overturned.

Police used water cannons and tear gas. Demonstrators demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who won a fourth consecutive term in elections in May last year.

During the summer, protests in Albania were peaceful: they began over a luxury tourist resort project on the country's untouched southern coast, which is now the subject of court disputes.
