Free since 1 January 2025
Since 1 January 2025 city and suburban transport in Belgrade has been free for all passengers. That covers buses, trams, trolleybuses and the BG voz city train. Monthly and annual tickets are gone — as are tickets themselves, because the ride is not paid for.
What no longer exists
The old system with zones and top-up cards has been abolished and BusPlus cards no longer work. Tickets are not sold at kiosks, from the driver or online — there is nothing to buy. There are no inspectors on transport and no fines for riding without a ticket: there is nothing to pay. If someone at a kiosk or online offers you a 'Belgrade transport card' or a zone ticket, that is outdated information or an attempt to sell you something unnecessary.
What remains useful
The Beograd Plus app still works, but no longer as a ticket office: you use it to check routes, timetables and vehicle arrival times. For someone who has just moved here, it is the easiest way to work out which bus or tram gets you to the address you need.
Night routes
Night lines in Belgrade run to their own timetable and are free as well. Intervals at night are longer than during the day, so check the time in the app before setting out rather than chancing it.
What is still paid
Free travel applies to Belgrade's city transport. Intercity buses remain paid: a ticket for Belgrade to Novi Sad or another city is bought at the bus station, as before. Taxis are of course paid, and prices differ between companies, so it is worth knowing the approximate fare before the journey. Other cities in Serbia have their own rules — in some places travel is paid, so check locally after arriving.
What this means in practice
For a newcomer the main thing is this: no card to buy, no top-up to worry about, nothing to tap on a validator. Knowing your route is enough to travel. That makes the first months in Belgrade noticeably easier: transport stops being a separate expense and a separate headache.
Data checked on 11 October 2026: free travel has applied since 1 January 2025 and covers city and suburban lines, including BG voz.
